RE: I am in Dirt Wheels This Month

About a year ago they published a pic I had taken of my grand daughter and her friend on my Ranger during spring break at Pismo. The kids got a huge thrill out of seeing themselves in a national magazine. Thanks DW!

RE: Running a second generator?

I use the same philosophy with my car. To keep the miles down, I just have it towed everywhere I go. Sounds crazy? It is! Use your generator. The hours used on it will have little impact on your resale. Most of us don't buy campers with concern about resale. The depreciation will take it's toll no matter what. If it wears out, have it rebuilt. It will outlast the motorhome anyway.
I don't agree with that. Although it's not a very accurate gauge, generator hours will give you some indication of how much a TH has been used. Now you may say that wouldn't change the price much and you may be right .. but it would steer me away from that unit if it was relatively new and had tons of gen hours. I bought a used TH and I looked at this very thing.
Since you can buy hour meters just about anywhere for about $25, the hours on one mean absolutely nothing! I can run mine for 5000 hours, clean it real good, change the meter and put on an additional 300 and you'd assume I only had 300 hours. Looks like I just made a sale to you!
Most people aren't that crooked. There are lots of telltale signs to look for. An hour meter is just one of them.
I was born during the day .. but it wasn't yesterday so your TH is still for sale :B

RE: Quickie Flush Works !

Tornado is similar to Quickie Flush except that the sprayer spins inside the tank possibly giving better coverage, not to start another "which flusher is best" arguement.
I looked at both pretty hard but went with quickie because it doesnt have any moving parts to break. Either one is a heck of alot better than sticking the wand down the toilet! I also am glad I put one on the gray tank as there was alot of crud in it also.
Amen to that! Next on my list is a Tornado

RE: Dryer Sheets

I'll have to put some dryer sheets in my tool box right next to the other essentials.. WD 40 and duct tape hahah
Seriously, I had heard that dryer sheets discourage mice in RVs. I just went on a trip. I thought all was well when I loaded my TH, no signs of mice anywhere. When I got to my destination there was mouse poo all over the counter tops. I guess my driving scared it out of them hahah. So now I'm going to test the dryer sheet theory on mice.
Thanks for the other tips.

RE: am i the only one

My planning is simple .. when the kid is out of school or not playing sports.
This year we spent 5 days in Pismo on the dunes in January, again in March, went to a 3 day basketball tournament near Yosemite, just got back from another 5 days at Pismo, going again last week of July and Thanksgiving week. Not bad considering I work full time + and the kid is in school.
I make time :B

RE: Weekend Warrior Company Condition?

Sounds to me like CrankyPants bought a WW and got hosed. If I dumped a pile of cash on something that turned out to be a pile I'd be complaining and whining too.
I think CrankyPants has earned the right to whine and complain.

As for a second gen .. I bought a Honda 2000 when I had my TT. When I got my TH it had an onboard gen and I was going to sell the Honda. I procrastinated and didn't and I'm glad! I use the onboard noisy gen in the morning when I have the microwave, coffee pot and waffle iron all going and that's about it. I use the Honda for everything else including a seperate battery charger. I've seen lots of THs doing the same thing.
So here is my opinion on a second gen ..although it's great to have and can be useful around the house too, it's not worth the $1K to buy one. But I'm really glad I have my Honda.

I got a wooden cover at an RV store where I live. They make several varieties and cost around $45. Camping World has them too I think.

RE: ADD A HITCH TO THE TOYHAULER?

Many states including us here in Calif only allow doubles (two trailers) with the first being a fifth wheel. In addition in Calif you will need a commercial drivers license with a doubles endorsement.
The first sentence is not true. ( imagine that, incorrect info on the internet ). The second sentence however is correct.
I have searched the California Vehicle Code and cannot find anything that addresses this. .. meaning I don't know. BUT! What I do know is that I have asked several CHPs about this. Most have no clue. One I asked said that the first trailer has to be a 5th wheel trailer. He's usually pretty knowledgeable. Now he may be wrong but you'll have to argue in court because he will write a ticket for it.

RE: credit card comercial "Priceless"

My question to the guy who got hit with a spotlight is WHY WERE YOU PASSING ON THE RIGHT? The left lane is for passing not the right. Something that irritates me to no end, folks don't know the rules of the road these days.
Maybe because the truck was moving slowly in the left lane?
I have to agree with you about being irritated with folks that don't know the rules of the road. Here's an excerpt from the California Vehicle Code..
Passing on the Right
21754. The driver of a motor vehicle may overtake and pass to the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions:
(a) When the vehicle overtaken is making or about to make a left turn.
(b) Upon a highway within a business or residence district with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width for two or more lines of moving vehicles in the direction of travel.
(c) Upon any highway outside of a business or residence district with unobstructed pavement of sufficient width and clearly marked for two or more lines of moving traffic in the direction of travel.
(d) Upon a one-way street.
(e) Upon a highway divided into two roadways where traffic is restricted to one direction upon each of such roadways.
The provisions of this section shall not relieve the driver of a slow moving vehicle from the duty to drive as closely as practicable to the right hand edge of the roadway.

RE: Weekend Warrior Company Condition?

I was talking to the factory two days ago and was told that they will begin production on the 2009's next Monday....
They will be 2010 not 2009
Does anyone besides me see something wrong with this? I always thought that September was the accepted norm to introduce the next year's models on cars and such. Building a 2010 a year and a half premature? Come on now let's be real. I certainly hope that when someone is buying a used RV they look at the "year first sold" box on the title so that they know how old it REALLY is.
WW borrowed a lot of money to fund its ambitious growth plans back in the glory days when it apparently thought the RV market would expand forever. Big mistake. Oil went through the roof, sales dropped into the toilet, but one thing never changed - the debt payment.
This sounds remarkably similar to the boating industry back in the 70s

RE: "Calling all Seasonal Campers"

I've had the same thing happen to me before. My bill was $250. It turned out to be the meter. At first the manager said there was nothing he could do. I told him the there was something that County Weights and Measures could do .. problem solved!

RE: Trying to decide on a power tongue jack

I'm looking for one too. Haven't made up my mind as to which one yet. I'm wondering with around 800lbs of tongue weight do I really need a 3500lb jack? I know, bigger is better, more power haha.
Best price I've found so far is about $210 shipped for a Barker 3500lb jack on ebay. If anyone knows of a better deal I'd love to hear about it.

RE: Toy Hauler Cover

Sand,
Which one did you go with ?? And how has it held up??
It's a Clasic Poly Pro III
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5375527
I bought it in December and so far so good. It's been through all of the elements that Mother Nature has to offer and it still looks like new. It has a 3 year replacement warranty. It's probably not the best or longest lasting TH cover available, but for the money I think it is worth it. If it lasts 3 years and only cost $220 delivered I'd say it's money well spent. It fits well, has zipper openings in all the right places and plenty of tie downs to secure it.

RE: How do you like your satellite radio?

They may have changed since I cancelled XM (however I doubt it) but it used to drive me up the wall when I'd be listening to Top Tracks which is supposed to be commercial free and they were constantly saying "you are listening to Top Tracks on XM radio, commercial free all the time, and coming up later today on Top Tracks XM commercial free satellite radio ......blah blah blah and be sure to check out our other channels on XM radio blah blah blah"
First of all they do NOT need to tell me I'm listening to XM radio because I paid to have all that stuff installed and I pay them a monthly fee so I am FULLY aware of what I'm listening to. Not only that but the head unit tells me all that stuff. I don't care what's coming up later in the programming and if I want to listen to their other channels I will without their constant prodding. Furthermore some of the junk they played on Top Tracks was certainly not a "top track". And don't bother sending them emails to complain or voice your opinion because you get an automatically generated form letter in response.
There, I feel better now hahahah

RE: Are they afraid of the dark?

I have been on both sides of that coin. Last year while camped at Oceano Dunes (on the beach camp anywhere)there was no one anywhere near us. About midnight I heard a vehicle stop about 50 feet from me and several young guys got out laughing, hooting, and hollering. I figured they were stuck in the sand and couldn't go any further. Next morning they fired up their SUV and drove off leaving their trash and beer cans behind. I never did figure that one out.
On the other hand last January again at Oceano Dunes the place was almost deserted. I found a spot I liked about 100 yards from some other campers and set up camp. Their kids kept riding their ATVs back and forth right by my trailer on their way to the "kiddie track" which was about 150 yards on the OTHER side of me. The next day I stopped by their camp just to say hi and the guy said "why did you park so close to us and between us and "our track"? At first I was dumbfounded and then I told him that I thought 100 yards was far enough away so as not to encroach on him and that I had no idea that the "kiddie track" 250 yards away from him was his.
